webmasters notes only:

Michael J Losty married Mary Clinton, Mary got to the USA before Michael and I found a Patrick Clinton in Manhatten in NYC< I do not know if this is MAry's father but it fits and this is why they were married in Manhatten.  Michael settled in the Catshills but he probably lived in Manhatten til he married, like Patrick, he arrived in NYC and stayed there til he was married, PAtrick went to Canaan and Michael went tothe Catskills   Michael's father was John Losty wo married Mary Caffery, Mary father was Christy Caffery, probably was Christoper, and Mary's mother was Ellen Kittrick.  Christy Caffery's  father was Patt Caffery born in 1795 in Monasterevin, Kildare Ireland   John Losty and Mary Caffery named one of their sons Christopher and another Patt probably after the grandfather and  great grandfather.   This is mostly suppositions but a lot of it fits perfectly   The info about Mary Caffery father and grandfather came from Family Search.   I truley believe the Lostys that arrived in the USA got off the boats and stayed in NYC until they could afford to move further north, especially if they did not have a relative to go to when they got off the boats

Hi Joan,

I have been meaning to get back to you but work this time of the year keeps me pretty busy. My line descends through Michael Losty(b.1850) and Mary Clinton(b.1848), whom you told me were married on 18 Jan 1874 in Manhattan, NY. I have a discrepancy as to where each came from. My notes say Michael came from County Cork, Ireland and that Mary was from Clare, in County Kildare. I have not pursued this as yet. I am not sure when they moved to Catskill, NY. Mary's obit states at the time of her death she had lived in Catskill for 51 years, making her arrival in town 1872. Newspapers have been known to be wrong. They owned a tavern on Water Street in Catskill where they lived early on, they later bought a house in town. Michael died 23 Sept 1910, Mary died 14 Sept 1923. All of their children's dates come from the family bible pages, which I have.

Their daughter Mary Ann(Mamie) was born 12 Nov 1874. She married William E. Phelan. I don't have any dates, just New Rochelle, NY as the place. They had 14 children, 4 of which died in infancy. At some point she was unable to care for the other 10 and they were placed for adoption through Catholic Charities and scattered. I have information about some of them, let me know if you want it.

Daughter Katherine T. Was born 20 June 1876. She married Charles Irving Embree in June of 1896. they lived in Catskill their whole lives and were known as Aunt Kate and Uncle Irv. He was listed in census records as a laborer, she worked in the knitting mill in Catskill. Uncle Irv died 8 Jan 1943 and Aunt Kate died 31 May 1958. They had one daughter, Mary E. b. 19 Apr 1897. Mary married Clifford A. Overbaugh 21 Jun 1919. Mary died 5 Mar1969 in Joliet, Illinois, Cliff died 1963. They had one daughter, Kathryn J. b. 23 Dec 1919, who married Raymond Anderson. I believe both are gone now. They had 2 daughters, Kathleen and Sharon. Both married and had children, I know little else.

Son John William was born 2 May 1878. He married Kathryn Mackie(Bridget) Whalen, b. Oct 1876. I have very little about them. I just started looking in the census records for her and I believe I have found her but I have no documentation to back it up. They had 5 children:Margaret A. b. 17 Nov 1902 and married Edward Conners(no children): Michael J. b.4 Jul 1904 d.23 July 1994 in Hudson, NY, married Margaret(Peg) Seymour(no children): Lawrence V. b.18 Feb 1906, d. 4 Sept 1996 in Syracuse, NY, married Consuelo(Connie) Wilbur and had 4 children, Kathleen, John William, Lawrence and Patricia(more info if you want it): John William b. 10 Feb 1908 and married Helen Bryan( no children): Katherine b. 10 Feb 1910, married Bernard Decoufle, had 3 children, John Mary and Pierre.

Daughter Christina F. was born 4 June 1880 and died 19 Nov 1900. Never married, no children.

Daughter Margaret A. was born 28 May 1883. She married Perry W. Coppage and had 2 children: Nan b. 5 Dec 1905 and Michael A. who died as an infant on 23 Apr 1911.

Daughter Elizabeth G. was born 23 Dec 1884. She married Andrew A. Klemm( b. 1878, d. 28 Dec 1912) in Catskill, NY on 31 Dec 1902. They had 2 children, Marian Elizabeth and Rosealma Gonzaga. At the time of Andrew's death, they were living in the Bronx. Elizabeth took her girls and moved back to Catskill and lived with her mother(by this time, Mary was a widow). Marian married Milton Miller (19 Oct 1936) She died childless on 15 Sept 1939 of TB. Rosealma is my direct line. She was born 29 Dec 1907 and she married Joseph A. Moore(b.20 Dec 1912, d. 13 June 1969) on 6 Oct 1935. They adopted 3 children: twins Joan Ann and John Albert b. 25 Aug 1939 and Patricia Ann(my mother)b. 21 May 1946. Rosealma spent the rest of her life in Catskill and died 7 Jan 1983.

Daughter Loretta C. was born 16 Oct 1886. She married William Sylvester Downey(b 1885) and they had 4 children: William (b. 15 Oct 1917 d. 29 Nov 1979). He married Helen Seeley 3 Apr 1940 and they had 3 children, Michael, Michelle and Daniel: Marguerite Clinton b. 23 July 1919, married Joseph St. Lawrence(22 June 1941) and had 4 sons, Joseph, Timothy, Christopher and George: Joan b. 13 Oct 1924 d.27 Apr 1925 of Scarlet Fever: and John Xavier b. 29 Mar 1927, married Nancy Tilford on 19 Feb 1930 and had 3 children, Kerry, Kraig and Keith. They are all grown with children.

I probably have more that I have omitted, especially on the most recent generations. I'm sure there are places I have omitted as well. If you are interested, I can print it up and send it to you. I have it all in my computer. Let me know. I really want to spend more time going backwards now. You gave me Michael's parents as John Losty and Mary Caffrey and their wedding date as 10 Aug 1833. Want to verify that before I add it to my records. Thanks and have a good day!

Michelle Davis
